The thinning sunlight streamed through the thinkly pack trees, becoming less and less visible. The last beams of sunlight cast shadows all around. The soft padding of animal could be heard here and there. A twig snap or branch be shifted, nothing to noticeable. Just a regular time in the forest, any other time it would have been peaceful. Yet as the sun set its self for the time of sleep the shadows grew. Many looked menacing, frightening. The daylight creatures began to settle as well, revealing a whole new side of the forest. Now the sun had set, and the fog was hugging the trucks of the ancient figures. Their limbs beginning to twist and shape into long dark talons, in the darkness. To anyone outside of the nature would have been scared, and that was exactly what Mika was.
The small girl was wondering through the endless collection of timeless trees. She played with her long red hair absently trying to find her way out. She had come in the forest only for the shelter of the trees, their great height and elegant leaves. It had seemed like a good idea at the time, a darkening day due to rain, yet still with the sun shineing. Of course she thought nothing of it when she had leened back and sat down to wait out the torrent of raindrops. It had only taken a few minutes of sitting comfortably to set her off in a sea of fantasies and a heart’s desires. When she had awoken the rain had stopped but she couldn’t find her way out, unknowingly she took herself deeper and deeper into the forest.
She shivers as she pushes on. Her hands begin to rub her bare arms, regretting not getting the long-sleeved shirt she saw in Sanchu. Her legs were worm but could be wormer if she hadn’t been in loose capris. Stepping over a log she shifted her pack with contained all her performing tools. She was about ten feet from the log when she heard it snap. She jumped and looked backwards. ‘It wasn’t very big only a few inches, maybe some animal broke it or another branch feel on top of it.’ Mika thought as she turned trying to keep calm. She started to play with her bracelet, and remembered her father’s strength. ‘He wouldn’t be scared.’ She thought, but then that nasty little voice in her head said, ‘He was also a grown man who could fight his way out if needed.’ Mika hated how that voice always seemed to be right. Snap. Mika whirled around to face the sound. Nothing but fog moving slowly, twisting it’s was around the tree trucks. She turned and kept walking only making it before she heard another snap. Though this time she didn’t turn to face the noise. No instead she started running, as fast as she could. Her arms were pumping at her sides, chest heaving. Mika was a fast running; she could win a race against a horse. But something she can’t out run was fear, the fear that the trees were trying to grab her. So she pushed harder, wincing slightly as the low branches or shrubs torn her skin. She turned to get around a tree, but was suddenly off balance. Arms spinning every which way Mika fell to the ground. Quickly getting up and slamming into the side of the tree. She rested against its base, tucking her legs in close, trying to control her breathing, and the tears that slid down her already red face. She didn’t know what would happen next.

The confines of the trees in the Carian Forest was dark and they grew darker still as the sun began to drop below the western rim. The shadows of the trees stretched as if they were the appendages of monsters and were trying to envelope everything they could reach. The cacophony of the birds nestled in the treetops only added a haunted tint to the entire scene. If one looked into the woods now, it would be no surprise if a ghost or spirit decided to drift into view.
The spookiness of the scenery was no comparison to the horror that Leaf had felt during the day earlier, however. The werewolf had spent his morning searching for his sworn brother, Shadow, but had instead stumbled upon a group of hunters. Bounty hunters. To his dismay, the thief was recognized and chased out of the city of Yamanash and into the woods. Had the rain not settled in, it would've been much more difficult of the young man to outrun the hunters. Even though he had been pursued several times in perhaps even closer proximities, the fear of being caught was always freshened with every step he took in his escape.
After hours of hiding out, Leaf finally deemed it safe enough for him to navigate around. The glint of orange through the trees indicated that he might have to spend his night outside in the wild. "Curses! I won't be able to go back to Yamanash for a while now," He muttered under his breath as he tousled his light blonde hair in a frustrated manner. Without anything better to do, Leaf began to wander around, looking for a nice spot to curl up for the night.
The sound of what seemed to be a sob caught the werewolf's ear and he spun around, narrowing his eyes in the direction of the sound. It was unusual for a person to be in the forest, especially at this hour. The sound struck his ears again, erasing any doubt that he felt the first time. There definitely had to be something there. Leaf looked around, considering whether he should go check out the source or bolt in the opposite direction. Maybe it's better to know what's there rather than not. After all, I'll just sneak up and take a peek." He thought to himself.
Taking all the care that he could, the thief snuck toward the direction of the sound as quickly and quietly as he could. Within seconds, he could hear the sobs quite clearly and began treading with immense care, hoping that he wouldn't spring a trap. The trees surrounding him were so large that they seemed to be able to hide anything. One tree, in particular, seemed to be the source of the noise and Leaf walked up to it, tapping the bark gently to make sure there was no secret trigger. Taking a deep breath, he peered around the trunk.
"Why, it's just a girl," he blurted almost in relief when he saw the redhead curled at the base of the tree, crying. The young man looked at her, wondering why this girl was here. "Hey, why're you crying?" Leaf asked, stepping out from behind the tree. "Are you lost?"

Mika's head snapped up as she heard someone talking to her. She looked up to the boy, he didn't look much older then herself. She quickly wiped her eyes and checks, she didn't want even a stranger to see her weakness. Is he the one that was chasing me? Was there someone even chasing me? But then who would be out here? She thought looking up. Her eyes were large, fear evident in them. She somehow manged to grip her legs tighter and pull then closer causing pain to sing through them. She bit down on her bottom lip and release her legs letting them fold under her. She looked up fear and pain mixed in her eyes.
"That would depend," She said slowly, "on who I'm talking to." She stayed silent for a moment trying to find the right words. "Like I'm not going to tell anything to a crazy person that lives in the middle of a forest." But he was dead on, she was lost very, very lost. She didn't want to offend the boy in case he was. Or maybe he just took shelter from the rain much like herself. She was facing him still but her eyes moved trying to see where she had ended up. Mika hadn't taken in anything while running which she deeply regretted now.
If she had to leave now she could very possibly just run deeper into the forest and maybe never come out. She took in the giant trees, the one she was sitting against was smooth, and very wide. Mika sat in between to rather large roots, a great spot for a temporary sleeping spot. But to the sides there where only a few bushes and animal tracks. That's when she thought of it. If it came down to it she could burn the bushes. They would spark to large to create a forest fire, but enough to hold off the boy for a few minutes. Her tools where at the top of her bag, easily reachable. But Mika didn't want that to happen, she hated anything that would harm an other person. She glanced down at herself and saw her legs and arms covered in red cuts, they would hurt if a branch hit her. She looked back up at the boy and wondered what cards he would play.

Initially, Leaf was stunned by the defensive reply of the girl, but then burst out in roaring laughter. "Bahahaha! A crazy person that lives in the forest? Is that what I look like?" he gasped between guffaws. He then stifled his laughter, trying not giggle at the picture of himself looking all scraggly and trudging through the woods like an old hermit. The thought was rather amusing and Leaf could feel his fatigue from the entire day evaporate.
He then looked at the girl again and realized how scared and wary she looked. Perhaps laughing wasn't the best way to prove that he wasn't a madman, Leaf decided as an afterthought. "Really though," the werewolf said, hoping that he hadn't instilled quite a horrible impression yet. "I don't think you belong in the forest, especially now that it's getting dark. Once night settles in, there'll be all those nocturnal predators that come trekking out scavenging for prey." He then paused a bit and looked around, "You know, like wolves and such. You wouldn't want to look like prey to them, now would you?"
While the words were partially meant to intimidate playfully, they were also true. While Leaf could just curl up in wolf form and sleep for the night without needing to worry too much for his life, he knew that a human girl would be in much more danger. After all, packs of wolves weren't unseen in this area. An adolescent human would be an easy target in the wild and with a disadvantage of perception during the night, they would be nearly defenseless. "Maybe you'd want to reconsider telling me about your situation now, eh?"

She watched as the boy began to laugh. That's not was a crazy person would do at all, now is it? She thought. But laughter as always was like a cold. She started to giggle. She put her hand over her mouth and glared at him. This was a serious! She listened carefully as he told her about the wolves. She looked at him and turned her head slightly and bit her bottom. No she wouldn't want that, but he seemed a bit over dramatic to Mika. Almost like he was trying to scare her. She giggled again, but tried to stop. She new wolves where in the area but it was like he came out of a bad show in her eye. Pausing and looking around, as if he were a performer. Then again he could be, Mika knew nothing about this boy maybe she should find out.
She said, "And why should I tell a strange boy in the middle of the woods? Seems a bit odd to me." She said crossing her arms and nodding her head, eyes closed. But she was only messing around. She opened her eyes and said, "Well I was coming from the city and the rain started. So i took cover in the trees, i had wondered a bit further then I thought when i sat down for a wait. Before i knew it i fell asleep, when i woke up i stupidly walked away. Then... " She really didn't want to tell him about her fright. "I ended up here. And now that i told you my pathetic tale what are you going to do about it kind sir?" She really did feel pathetic right now and some what deflated. Maybe she could start a fire and that would keep the animals away? Or... no Mika really didn't know what to do in a time like this.

Raising his eyebrow at the girl's query, Leaf could feel the words "suit yourself" at the tip of his tongue, but the tone of her voice tipped him off that she was just joking. Leaf rolled his eyes but grinned as the girl opened her eyes and proceeded to tell him about her little tale. He nodded thoughtfully as she finished and closed his eyes, tapping his index finger on his forehead. "That seems like a sticky situation you've gotten yourself into. Well, we are a ways away from the edge of the forest and from there quite a bit away from the closest city. Plus, it's getting dark out." Leaf made a gesture toward the West, where the sun was making it's last farewells to the land. The treetops that had been draped in orange minutes earlier were now cast in a rather unappealing grey shadow. The stars had yet to make their way out fully and the world was in the awkward dull shade between evening and night.
"Now, I can give you a couple of options. I can point you in the direction of Yamanash, but I won't be venturing with you since I am… heading the opposite way," the werewolf hesitated. He wasn't about to go near the city, especially if the hunters were still looking for him. They were a very persistent profession. "Second," Leaf continued, "You can spend the night out here with me. While I'm not some sort of weird hermit, I do know how to survive in the wild." The boy chuckled, remembering the earlier part of their conversation. He then looked around, feeling the tree next to him. If they were going to be outside for the night, it would be the best if they had a fire. Unfortunately, dry kindle was going to be a pain to find after the earlier shower.

Mika could see that the boy didn't get her joke at first. As he talked about he sun she watched to go down and she sighed. She didn't mind the dark, but in this forest she wasn't so sure. But she did wonder about this boy. There was something about him that was familiar, she felt like she had seen his face before. Other then that he seemed like an alright person, as long as he wasn't lying about leaving the city. Mika had not missed his hesitation at all, in fact it only made her want to know what was up. After all that was her nature, to find what was wrong with things or unusual. She listened carefully and decided fairly quickly. "I'll stick with you, thanks." She said smiling something she hadn't done in a bit.
She thought about the fire again and shifted so she was on her knees facing away from the boy. She reached in her pack and grabbed her tools. Next she stood up and winced from the stretching skin. She walked around a bit still insight of the boy and then she found some pieces of wood, old branches that fell. She picked up as many as she could, again wincing. When she got back, she cleared a small patch and set up the wood in a log cabin fashion. She took a small bottle from her bag and purred a little over the wood, in the middle and bottom. Then she struck a match, "Stand back." She stated and light the liquid. The wood was in flames in seconds, now she only needed to keep it that way. She looked around for a few twigs and spotted a pile. "Hey boy, can you hand me those twigs?" She made sure to highlight the word boy as a hint to maybe introduce himself. "By the way my names Mika." She thought she could trust him for the night, but you never know.

Leaf shrugged at the girl's decision. He had pretty much expected it, seeing as most wouldn't enjoy traveling in the woods on their own after dark. "Well, two people are better than one, right?" He matched her smile and watched as she grabbed her pack (which he hadn't noticed before) and pull things out. Then, he looked quizzically at her when he got up and began gathering wood. She seemed a little impaired by something in her leg. Perhaps she had gotten hurt earlier, which was why she was where he found her, the werewolf speculated. He also noticed the wood the girl was picking up off the ground. Certainly some if not most of them were damp and not very good for feeding fires. "Um…" Leaf muttered, attempting to intervene, but the girl had already stacked the wood and poured some sort of liquid over them. Without much warning, down when the match and the entire stack went ablaze. At least they didn't have to worry about a fire anymore.
While Leaf was still gaping at the efficiency of the the girl, he was snapped out of his state when she addressed him quite insolently. "Boy? Is that how you address someone older than you?" Leaf growled with a tone of annoyance, but still bent to pick up the twigs and handed them to the girl who then introduced herself as Mika. "The name's Leaf," he snapped, emphasizing his name, but then softened his demeanor. "That flammable liquid… why does a girl like you have something like that?" Leaf was curious. He knew that it was probably similar to what people used in lamps and torches and such, but he never met anyone who carried the stuff around. "Don't tell me you're an arsonist or something, he snickered, not able to picture such a pitiful looking girl doing anything of the sort. Upon the other hand, he himself looked nothing like a thief, either.

Mika had her eyes on the fire, and tilted her head to that her read hair fell in front of her face. Though it was a bit straggly it still covered most of the side of her face. And that was very good since she was hiding a smile. Was he older? Hm she had guess that he was a bit older then her, but she also guess he thought she was younger then she was do so her size. She looked up and smiled at Leaf rolling her eyes as she said, "Ya know I don't think your that much older then me. I am fifteen after all." She took the twigs and put them in places that would keep the fire going. When he said something about 'a girl like you' she put her hand on her hips and said, "Excuse me? What is that suppose to mean?" It was offensive but Mika new what he meant. In a lower tone she muttered to herself, "Do I really look that pathetic? I guess i do..." She watched the flames dance, it was amazing how the flames flickered and twirled. Consuming the wood so gracefully. That's what Mika tried to do when she danced with fire, to show its gracefulness not just the destructive powers must people thought about when the someone said fire.
"Well if you must know," She said dragging out the must, "I'm a dancer and i dance with fire. I use this to keep the wood sticks i hold flaming and the coals. Oh, I also swallow it so i can breath fire that's pretty cool." She looked a Leaf waiting for a reaction, after all he had called her a arsonist. She noticed that he hadn't sat down yet and patted the ground next to her, "You gonna stand all night? I don't think that would be very comfortable." She looked back to the flames tucking her hair behind her ears and tried to see the sky through the tree tops. Hoping to see the stars. She didn't know any of them but they were all so unknown, and unique.

Leaf couldn't help but do a double take when Mika said she was "Fifteen? You look like you could be twelve!" He sputtered rather rudely. Realizing that, he looked away and smoothed his hair over in a nonchalant way. "Well, yours truly is seventeen, I'm still older than you." The boy could already anticipate the reaction on the girl's face. That was definitely really lame... He thought. The girl then snapped at him about his choice of words and looked as if she had taken offense. "I meant what I said," he shrugged. "You just don't look like the type to carry something combustable around." Leaf then watched the girl mutter something to herself. The werewolf raised his eyebrows quizzically, but before he could ask her to speak up, he was startled by the sudden snap of a twig inside the licking flames.
His attention returned to Mika when she began speaking about her background. As she spoke, Leaf's eyes widened. Her occupation was so spectacular and while it wasn't as extreme as an arsonist, her being able to breath fire was quite an amusing thought. (Well, to be honest, the mere fact that she could put that stuff in her mouth was already special enough.) "Wow, that's really something," the thief sighed in awe. "I think I may have seen some of your--er... what do you call them--peers in the cities before. I just never paid much attention to them before. I guess I'll see them in a different light now." Leaf felt a bit anxious as he spoke of those street performers. It was really a lie that he didn't pay attention to them, but the only reason he did was to steal from them and he wasn't about to tell that to someone who could breathe fire.
"Wh-what? Of course I'm going to sit down," Leaf stuttered as his train of thought was chopped in half by the girl. Plopping himself down on the earth, he could feel the heat of the flames much more evidently. The sudden drop, however, also put him in the path of smoke and unable to adjust quickly, the boy's eyes began watering and he started to cough vehemently. "Hack! Cough! Ohh... That burns my eyes! Hack!" The werewolf quickly crawled to the side, determined to get out of the billowing smoke's way. Finally, when he had found a spot away from the burning cloud, Leaf found himself sitting quite pitifully on the ground, wiping his eyes with his sleeves. He looked up at Mika, not really wanting to see her reaction.

As Leaf said she looked as if she were twelve mixed emotions washed over her face. It was both a curse and a gift in Mika's eyes. On one hand she could fool people into helping her and also earn so extra sympathy points when preforming. Yet that also made people not take her seriously and think that she can't do anything for herself what so ever. But trying to stay positive she smiled and laughed it off. She looked over to Leaf and said, "I know. Don't you think i use that to my advantage?" She looked in the fire again and listened to him talk about meaning what he said, at least his restating it made it sound a little better. As he talked about her art she smiled and it grew wider as he said he would see them in a different light.
Most people thought of them as performers like every other person that tries to make a living. But what they do isn't something anyone could pick up and do, it requires practice and well someone not be afraid to get hurt. Which Mika was a lot, burned one way or another. She reached to her right leg to rub a burn that was a few months old but instead she felt all the cuts around her legs, frowning she reached for her bad and dug around for a cloth, maybe some alcohol, she uses for her burns. Finding it she let a bit fall on it an old piece of clothe and rubbed it gently.
As Leaf stuttered an answered to her sitting comment she couldn't help but think, He tend to stutter when he's unsure. She was surprised when he started coughing. But then saw the smoke going in his direction, she hadn't noticed it much herself. She dug around in her pack again for an other piece of cloth finding an almost empty water skin pouch. She took both items and walked over to Leaf and sat in front of him. Mika new how much smoke could burn and poured some of the water on the cloth. She debated whether or not do it herself or hand him the cloth. She looked up and smiled, "Fires cool, but the smoke sucks huh?" Then she handed him the cloth, "Slowly and gently." She said to Leaf, hoping he wouldn't poke himself in the eye or something.

Through his teary eyes, Leaf could see Mika deftly handle a piece of cloth, pouring enough water to make it moist without drenching it. It made Leaf wonder how many other things she would be able to pull from her pack. For some reason, she seemed to hesitate a little before handing it to the boy. "Fire's cool. Ha." Leaf chuckled mirthlessly as he reached his hand out to accept the cloth. It was soft and damp and he quickly put it up to his eyes, wiping away the tears and reducing the burn. The wet cloth felt so nice and cool and made Leaf smile back at Mika.
After he finished wiping his eyes, Leaf blinked a couple of times to check his vision. He tugged gently at the cloth with his fingers, playing with it casually as he looked up, realizing how dark it had become. In fact, the sun had completely disappeared and the stars had embedded themselves into the night sky. Then, he nimbly and neatly folded the cloth before offering it back to the girl. "Thanks," he grinned, studying Mika through the licking tongues of fire. Even with the distortion from the smoke and flames, he found that the redhead was actually a rather adorable figure with large green eyes. Perhaps it was also Mika's small figure. Leaf couldn't help but feel that she was innocent and untouched by the evils of society. The feeling that Leaf got off of her was almost like another figure that he had met before: a mysterious person named Roxiri.
Leaf sighed to himself as he thought about this in comparison to his own background. As far as he could remember, he had been a criminal and since he was Mika's age, he had been on the interstate wanted list. Leaf had never despised his life, for he never knew a different one. That was, before he met Shadow. He had a tense introduction with the dark-pelted werewolf, but they hit it off soon after. What made this werewolf special was that it jumped in the way of a knife to save Leaf. It had been the first time anyone had risked their life for his. Not only so, but even after Shadow learned of Leaf's occupation and pursuers, he decided to stay by the white wolf's side and did not betray him, even if it meant that he also became a target. It was the first time someone else trusted Leaf completely.
Drowning in his own thoughts, Leaf could feel the edges of his eyes damp again, but this time it wasn't from the smoke. Realizing it, Leaf sat up and wiped vigorously at his eyes with his sleeve. "Darn the smoke…" he whispered, turning his head away from Mika, not wanting her to see his weakness. It was embarrassing. Through the blurry film upon his eyes, Leaf could see into the endless dark depths of the woods. He's out there somewhere, I'm sure. He thought silently, feeling the well beneath his eyes starting to leak again. He's definitely alright. My brother…

Mika watched as Leaf put the cloth to his eye, hoping it would help. When he smiled she smiled, happy to be of help. She hadn't realized that what she had said could be a joke, but it made her laugh a little. When he offered it back she took it and said, "Glad to be of service." Pulling one side of her mouth up. She looked down at the cloth for a minute pulling at a loose string, although when she got it out it only frayed the edges. Sighing she looked back to Leaf and found him looking at her. Blushing, as she did when ever someone looked at her directly for sometime, she said, "What?"
When Leaf sighed Mika raised an eyebrow, wondering what he was thinking. She looked down at the wet cloth on her lap and thought about her father. When she was at her first fire's smoke had burned her eyes. He had done something similar, brushing the smoke induced tears from her eyes on that cold day not so long ago. She had only been 13 when her father showed her how to light a fire. Neither of them had none that it would one day be her living when he was gone. The thought made tears prick her eyes and one even slide down her face. When Mika noticed it she quickly whipped it away and looked back to Leaf. She saw him looking away and said something about the smoke.
She nodded and said, "Yeah..." Knowing something other then the smoke had upset him she smiled softly. "Hey Leaf, whatever it is its gonna get better, it' ok, at least it will one day." She said it for Leaf as well as herself. But her words reminded her of a poem she had once heard, not noticing that Mika was saying it out loud she recited it, "There's always a little truth behind every 'just kidding', a little knowledge behind every 'I don't know', a little emotion behind every 'I don't care', and a little pain behind 'It's okay'." Mika sighed and moved so that she was facing the fire beside Leaf and leaned back on the palms of her hands legs in front of her ankles crossed. She looked up at the sky above their heads, "Do you know any constellations Leaf?" Trying to change and lighten the subject.

It was curious how Mika's face seemed a little redder than usual, even by the firelight when she caught Leaf staring at her. "Nothing." he replied simply, continuing to look at her. All the while, his thoughts caught up with him and the long silence that followed was accentuated by the crackling fire.
As he gazed into the dark forest, he heard Mika speak. Her words were of some comfort, but at the same time seemed to spark his emotions even more. "Yeah," he croaked, still not looking at her. He hoped that she was right, that he would be able to find his brother soon. The poem that she then recited drove straight into the boy's heart. Wasn't that blunt? And yet all very true. The thief had to live using lies and with that came a facade. Recently, it had begun to wear, but that only put him in a discomforting spot between his confidence and conscience. It hurt a lot, to question his own morals and yet having to survive when the situation was present.
Blinking back the last of the moistness at the edges of his eyes, Leaf wiped his face again before turning back to the warmth of the flames. He found Mika looking up at the sky, her gaze thrown so far into the distance. Hearing her question, Leaf raised his head as well. He had spent some time with scholars before and knew bits and pieces of different things. "Well," he said, trying to rid of the last quivering in his voice. "There's Pisces over there," he stated, pointing up at the cluster of stars in the dark blanket of sky. The werewolf then ran his honey-colored eyes across the sky, trying to find another constellation to fix his mind on.
"There's Andromeda," he said, pointing to another place in the sky. "There are stories behind every constellation. Do you know the story about Andromeda?" Leaf looked back at Mika with an expectant look on his face.

Mika's eyes searched the dark skies as if to find answers. The stars where an unknown place, far and distant. Each little ball of light held it's own past, present and future. Mika thought that was her favorite part of not having a place to call home. You could travel distances and see the different stars, hearing their stories and myths. She had only heard a few stories, only two or three. Nothing really, but out of them her favorite would have to be the story of the Great Bear. Mika closed her eyes and let her memory retell the tale.
There was once a great and powerful bear. Who took pleasure in destroying a small villages crops, and stealing their fish. Every day at sunset he would come to the village and do these horrible acts. Everyone in the village, even the chief who was strong with magic, thought there was nothing to be done. Until one day a stranger, a traveler came to the village. Upon hearing what the bear has inflicted upon the village he told the chief, "I will kill the bear." So that night as the sun was setting the villagers shut their doors and windows, while a single figure stood out. When the bear came he thought that it would be simple like any other fight. When it began the bear realized, no it isn't. So the bear ran, and the traveler ran after. This chase lasted many moons until the traveler caught up. He gripped the bear by it's tale and began to swig. With such a momentum the bear lifted off its feet and his little nub of a tale began to grow, and stretch. When the traveler thought the bear had learned its lesson he let go. And the bear sored into the sky, where it remained never to bother the village again.
