Matthias is a shy, cautious character who doesn't like to talk and is often nervous when it comes to crowds. He is intelligent, but his talent is wasted because he is "only to be seen, not heard." He is obedient and doesn't seem to have his own point of view. Matthias really looks up to his older brother, Konrad, and sees him as a super rolemodel. He was deeply hurt when his brother disappeared one day after getting lost in a storm.

Matthias was born in a family of Daikan nobles. He was always overshadowed by his extroverted brother and because of that, became used to being pushed around. Despite his brother's efforts to push him into the limelight, Matthias always somehow sank back into the shadows of others. 

When Matthias was little, he displayed genius in the branches of music, literature, and sciences. However, only few people discovered this hidden talent. One such person was Konrad, his older brother. Konrad was always encouraging Matthias and in his eyes, Konrad was the best person in the whole world. The older brother who was always there when he was sad. The older brother who always picked him up when he fell down. The older brother who gave him a push when he needed it. Matthias' goal was to become just like Konrad.

But then, tragedy befell them. One day, when Matthias was ten Konrad and a group of soldiers were sent on a mission to catch a runaway criminal. A few hours after their departure, a large storm broke out. The group went missing after that. A few soldiers' broken corpses were found at the bottom of a cliff. A mudslide, they concluded. Konrad remained missing in action. Matthias was heartbroken. 

After the incident, Matthias was neglected by his family. No longer was Konrad there to force at least SOME attention onto the poor boy. It was the darkest days of Matthias' life.

Three years later, a miracle seemed to happen. Konrad reappeared in front of their doorstep. He was healthy, though something seemed different about him. Matthias was overjoyed, but he could sense pain and discomfort coming from his brother's heart. He asked about it, but Konrad would only put on a grim face and turn away when the topic was mentioned. Matthias remains confused, but is glad to have his brother back.
