"You can't get away from me, Linn. I won't let you!"
She pounded through the forest, forcing stray branches out of her path. Fear and exhaustion gripped at her lungs and limbs, causing her to slow and stumble. Her kind were usually very strong, but being chased by an unyielding demon, was like a child being chased by a starving wolf.
A root protruding from the soil caught Linn off guard. She flew through the air and landed on the ground with a thud. She gasped for air, her lungs empty. The predator approached her.
"Daughter," He cooed, menacingly. "Why would you want to run away from me?" He asked.
Linn cocked her head to look at him, lifting herself onto her hands and knees. He was tall and strong, with broad shoulders and venomous amber eyes. When he was contempt, which he rarely was, his eyes were a piercing blue.
Linn looked just like him, except for her eyes. She had her mother's eyes, but now, in fear, her eyes were yellow.
"You killed my mother!" She spat.
Her father was taken aback. "I never touched her after your birth."
"Liar!" she shrieked, scrambling away from him.
"Darling, I love you. I loved Akiko. I would have never hurt her." He sounded so sincere that, for a moment, Linn wanted to believe him.
"That's all your kind wants!" Linn whispered. "To mate then tear their children away from the ones they care about..." Tears welled in her eyes. She did not know if it was from the stitch in her side, fear or grief.
Her father reached down and patted her shoulder. "I'm only here to give you something." He answered. "stand up." He helped Linn to her feet and she glared at him.
He pulled an object out from the pouch hanging from his side. He handed Linn the hilt of a knife. She took it and slid the dagger from its leather sheath.
"I want it to protect you," Her dad murmured.
Linn grinned crookedly. She lunged forward and thrust the blade into the monster's stomach. He coughed in surprise and made a fierce gurgling sound. Blood spewed in Linn's face.
Linn jerked awake, sitting upright. Her hands flew to her face, feeling for the familiar, sticky liquid. She looked around. She wasn't in the forest, wither her father, but in an alleyway, with rats. She cringed.
Linn stood, brushing the dirt and straw from her trousers. She sighed and looked around. Sunlight filtered through the overcast of gray clouds. The air was crisp and cool. Her dagger hung on her belt.
She was ready to go out into town, but not ready to beg for money. She poked her head outside the alley and listened to the crowd. Many people buzzed about the market place. They haggled for friut, and young children cried over spilled milk. It was the same every day.
Linn tucked her wings tighter against her back. she smeared dirt on her face, to make herself look much more desperate than she was, and headed off into the street.
