She hugged me as I looked at the door nothing mattered anymore. Not me, not my sister not even getting out of here. “It’s alright. I’m here. There was no need for you to leave this place.” Those were the last words I would ever hear.
I would like to say that I remember all of my life up to this point, but I cannot. I am not even sure what I remember is true anymore. Since I do not have long left I should just say it was real for I will never find out.
I was born the elder twin, my sister coming after me. We were people called identical twins, but we did not find that out until much later. We were close, like all twins. Well at least I hoped that all twins were like us. Though we both looked alike I always thought my sister looked more beautiful. Even though we both had blond hair; I kept mine short, never having it go past my shoulders; while my sister let I grow out and always had it in curls. She found herself wearing more skirts and dresses while I wore pants. She enjoyed wearing clothing that showed her slender waist and long legs. I did not. Even with different styles we both had the same friends all through our school years.
I would say our first time being separated was when we started University. We both entered the same school but were studying in different departments. Emily was studying the arts while I was studying business. We had no classes together and barely say each other outside school. It would be the first time that we would have different friends.
It would be on our 22nd birthday that we would spend our time together. Our parents bought us plane tickets to a country of our choice for our birthday. We had both chosen to go to the same country. It was like the last four years had never happened. We were as close as we could be. We travelled to the locations sightseeing, watching plays and trying the local cuisine.
One day Emily found a tour brochure at our hotel that would take out to some ruins. The price was affordable, so the two of us went. We never reached the destination.
What happened on our way there I am not quite sure. The next thing I remember was I was in room. A room I would get to know quite well. The walls were white and apart from a door the room was empty. The door had a small slit door a window which opened form the outside and had no handle.
My first instinct was to run to the door and open it, but there was no doorknob so my mind eliminated that option. Instead I looked around for Emily, but she was not in the room. I ran to the door and hit it hoping that there would be someone that heard me. All I got was silence. There was no sound, the only thing that I could hear was the air entering and leaving my body.
I continued to hit the door not wanting to give up hope. I had no idea how long I had been hitting the door. I had no watch and there was no clock. There was nothing to tell be the time. I hit the door even harder. I was scared that I had been left alone here.
Eventually I gave up. I had received no response. I would try again later, maybe then someone would be there. I made my way to a corner of the room and sat down on the ground. I looked at the walls. They were all white; there was not even a sign of an exterior wall. I just kept on looking at them hoping something would change.
Time went by; I’m not sure how long. It seemed like a long time for me. I found myself closing my eyes and wanting to sleep. I lay down and slept. And such was my pattern for the first few cycles. I would not call them days since I am unsure if it was a day. I would wake up, bang on the door and then sit in my corner and stare at the walls. Sometimes I would look at the door. When I became tired I would go to sleep.
Even through all those cycles I never once got a response for anyone or anything. I was beginning to give up all hope of ever getting out alive. I was going to die here. I went to sleep thinking those thoughts.
When I woke up I found a note lying in front of door. Someone was here. The person that trapped me here had come while I slept. I crawled to the note and opened it up. There was only one sentence. Soon the door will open.’
I looked at the door. Was whoever keeping me here releasing me? I held onto the note. It was the hope that I needed in order to be released from this place. I returned to my corner and sat there waiting. It was going to open soon the note had said so.
When I woke up again the door had been opened. Without a seconds hesitation I ran towards the door and opened it all the way. What I saw caused me to drop my note.
In front of me was a corridor I could not see the end of. On the walls there were doors quite like mine. Apart from mine all of them were closed. I stepped out of my room and the door slammed the door behind me. I turned around and tried to open the door and found that it was locked.
I had no choice but to move forward. I had no idea if this hallway led anywhere. So I started walking forward. It was better than remaining in the same spot. At least it gave me something to think about. It was better than being in that room.
I continued to walk forward. I walked past the endless doors and yet it seemed like there was no end to this path. I turned back to see how far I had gone and what I saw almost destroyed all the hope that I had within me. The room I had left was right behind me. I had not taken any turns to this point so there should have seen the same thing behind me as I did in front, but I did not.
I looked at the door and despair filled me. I was about to give up when I noticed another note. This one was on the door. I opened it and read it. ‘Welcome to the Endless Corridor. There is only one door that leads you out. If you find it you can leave. Good luck.’ I crumpled the note and threw it at the door. This person was playing with me now. I was not going to give in.
I grabbed the closest door and opened. It led to back to the hallway. I entered it. The door closed behind me and locked. It looked like I had no choice to continue. I opened the next door. It led to another section. The pattern continued on and on.
After some time I started to mark the doors I was opening with my own blood. I wanted to make sure I was not going through the same doors over and over. Yet no matter how many doors I marked it looked like there was another door to replace it. I was not even sure how long this pattern continued for. It seemed like a very long time.
I lay down to rest when I found a door I had not opened or even seen up to this point. The door itself was much smaller than the other doors but it was still a door. It was a simple wooden door with a handle. I reached for it and prayed it would lead me out of here.
I tried to turn the handle but it was locked. I started to kick the door hoping it would opened up but all I did was hear a crack. When I ran out of energy I lay there looking at the door. It was my way out and yet I could not open it. I lay there and tears started to cry. I wanted to go home. I wanted to see my family. I wanted to see Emily.
I fell asleep this cycle crying.
When I woke up I was still in this corridor. It was starting to hit me now. I was never getting out. This person was just playing with me. I spent that whole cycle and who knows how many cycles sitting there looking at the door. My way out was right in front of me and yet I could not open the door.
That was when I heard the voice. It was a faint whisper but it was there. Someone was calling out. As much as I want to go find the voice that was calling out I remained there. This had to be another trick of that person. One to give me hope that I could get out. So I ignored it.
I looked at the door and found it had a key hole. Why was I only noticing this now? Maybe it did not notice it before because I had no way opening the door. I looked around but found no hint of an object that could maybe hold a key. I placed my hands in my pockets and noticed that there was something in it. I opened pulled out the object and found that I had a key. I had been sure that it had not been there before.
I placed the key in the hole. I was expecting to the key not to work and it was just another cruel trick. I heard a click and opened the door unlocked. I put my hand on the knob and it turned. I opened the door and saw darkness. It was not the corridor again. I entered the door and then the darkness surrounded me.
I turned to look at the entrance and found that the door had closed again. I was stuck in the darkness. I held my hands out as I walked. I had no idea where I was going but I did not stop. So far the notes had not lied to me. I should be able leave if I continued. Then I felt something in front of me. It felt like a wall and I moved my hands around and found what felt like a door. I looked for the doorknob and found it. I prayed that it would turn and it did. I opened the door.
I entered and found myself in the first room that we had been in to begin with. How could I have found myself in the same room I had left? There was only one door. How could there be two entrances to the room? But I was sure it was the same room since the note was there. I picked it up just to be sure. It was.
I crumpled the paper up and threw it on the ground. I was being played with. I sat down in my corner and sat there. What was the point of getting up anymore? No one was coming to save me. I doubt anyone even knew where I was.
Within a few cycles the door opened up again but I did not move. I was not getting out I was trapped here. More cycles passed by. I stared at the walls. It took me strength just to remember the past. Soon all I could remember was Emily. Eventually I could not even remember the person associated with the name. I barely knew who I was.
When the door opened on its own I did not respond. I saw her enter the room. Her blond hair long and curly. Her eyes green as grass. Her dress flowing to the ground. Yet it did not matter, I did not know her. She walked towards me. She placed her hands around me. “It’s alright. I’m here. There was no need for you to leave this place.”
I woke up and looked to my side. My sister Rose lay there asleep. I sighed in relief. I thought I had lost her. The last thing I remembered was that there was a crash. The bus swerved off the road and down the hillside. Some people died instantly while others had wounds too severe to tend to. The few of us that managed to get away with a few injuries headed out to look for help. Though not far from the road, the hill was too steep to climb. Rose and I suggested we follow if from down here. It would eventually even out. And so we did.
We walked until the sun set. We shared what little food we had and started to look for shelter. Rose managed to find a little cabin in the nearby woods. We all stayed there. Something happened that night but I could not remember. The next this I know I am waking up in this bed.
I look at Rose who is asleep so soundly yet something seemed wrong. I looked around, though at first glance this looked like a hospital room it was not. I could tell. Yet I sat in my bed not moving. I was afraid if I left the room Rose would disappear.
Just then the door opened. A man walked in. He looked like a doctor but I was not sure.
“Do you remember what happened two nights ago?” he asked me.
“It’s a little blurry,” I said.
He did not seem like he was trying to harm me. He looked more concerned. He kept on looking at Rose with a worried expression.
“What’s wrong with Rose?” I asked.
The doctor looked at me surprised. It was if as he expected me not to know my own twin sister.
“You remember her?” he asked me.
“Yes how could I forget my own twin?”
“I see I was going to wait until your parents arrived but I will tell you first,” the doctor said.
“Tell me what?”
“Well the two of you were attacked by a device an alien race use to survive. That cabin you had found contained two such devices.”
“I don’t get it. Are you saying aliens attacked us?”
“Not exactly. Let’s just say that a couple years ago a space ship broke apart while entering earth’s atmosphere. The aliens having no chance of survival imprinted themselves onto these devices and scattered them as they landed. We had thought we had found them all but I was wrong.”
“How do I know you are to lying to me?”
“You and your sister are not the first case we had. According to the paperwork in my family I once had a sister, but I have no memory of her. Yet there are pictures of her everywhere. It seems the devices eliminate all memories of the person within others as it eliminates the person who inhabits the body. The alien then takes the body for oneself.”
“You are saying that you also were attacked?”
“No, my sister. We found about the device when it was too late. However, we have tried the best save others like you and your sister. But.”
He paused and looked at Rose again.
“But what?” I said.
“We were able to save you before the machine started the process, but we were too late for you sister. We managed to disconnect her from the machine, but the damage had already started.”
“Does that mean there is no way to save her?”
“We do not know much about the process and your sister is not the first. We are working our hardest to save them.”
“But you have not had any luck until now.”
“Until you two arrived.”
“What do you mean?”
“You are the first person to remember someone that has fallen into this state. It is possible that they can be saved. We just need to know why you remember.”
I looked at Rose and then back to the doctor.
“What happens if you cannot save her?”
“Well depending on the damage she might sleep and never get up or she could get up but never do anything more than have an empty gaze. It seems the fight that you sister has to win is inside her mind. We cannot help her with that.”
“Then how can I help.”
“You must reach her somehow. A part of her must be holding onto you.”
I got out of my bed and took Rose’s hand. I was not going to leave her. I was going to bring her back. I was not going to let the world forget about her.
“Tell me, what must I do to save her?”
“We studied their technology and we think we may have found a way you can help. Though it might be a danger to you.”
“Please tell me doctor.”
“We cannot send you in but we can have you modify the world she is in. Add notes, open doors, create keys. The clues you must leave must look like your sister’s mind is trying to help itself. However, there is a chance you will encounter the small part of the alien that is within her. Do not confront it. Do you understand?”
“I will do it.”
