BOOK ONE. Dragons
The mighty roar of two very large Dragons ripped through the sky, thundering down to the ground from the battlefield in the sky. Bright flashes of fire lit up the clouds for brief seconds as either dragon spat large plumes of flame at one another in an attempt to tear the others wings with their powerful flames. The dark blood of the mighty Dragons rained down from the sky as their sharp weaponry tore at the others scales, ripping and shredding through the thick scaley flesh that only a dragon could damage. The other Dragons watched from the below the thunderous clash of two of their brethren, watching the dark clouds for the black silhouettes that occasionally made an appearance as their flame back-lit the clouds. For centuries, this monstrous race had lived in peace, it had been so long since the last fight between Dragons shook the walls of their homes, deep within the mountains of Dragon Country; it was so long ago, that only Gilgamesh Peacekeeper, and a few of the Dragon Elders actually remembered the battle that partook in the very skies above them. The battle for power between Barsk Scaleshredder and Blozend Bloodscale had changed the way all Dragons lived forever. Gilgamesh was son of the victor, Blozend, and was thrust into the position of Dragon King when his father died in battle against a horde of rogue Dragons, still loyal to their leader, Barsk who had been defeated in their ancient battle.
Gilgamesh was a large Dragon, much like his father, and the biggest of the Dragons who had ever led the mighty race before. His scales were a deep hue of blood red that had black tints around the edges, giving them the sinister look of Hellfire; his original name before he took other from his father. Long spikes made of bone ran down the dragons muscled back and down his thick tail, where they met and converged into a large round tail, armed to the teeth with spiny spikes. Now just the age of 567, the Dragons body was already covered in large gashes from the many fights he had fought in against Barsk and his clan, aiming to bring peace to those that lived in Dragon Country, and when Gilgamesh finally struck down Barsk's body, which now lay under tonnes of water on the ocean floor, he truly gained his place among the Great Dragons.
But a new power had risen, Sterk Nightshade, the female Dragon had become well known around the Country of Dragons for defeating armies of Humans who had trapped and enslaved Wyverns who had then later become corrupted, on her own. The Dragon was given her name for her dark scales, the colour of night. Though her scales were actually a dark shade of Navy Blue, the blended almost perfectly in with the black abyss of the sky at night, making her a threat to all who didn't watch the skies closely enough. It was these dark scales that had given her the edge of the Human armies, along with her quick and agile body. Sterk was average size for a Dragon, being no bigger than some of the young adults that lived in the north mountains of Dragon Country, but her size gave her an advantage against the bigger of dragons. Because she was so small, the female Dragon could outmanoeuvre her rivals and was much faster, she would fly around her opponent, searching out blind spots and weak points in their thick armour, before swooping down onto them. Her forelegs had claws sharper than Gilgamesh's and were as sharp as they were tough, she had no trouble in ripping through the scales of even the thickest of Dragons, despite her small size, and her bite was far worse. Unlike most Dragons who only had the power over flame and could spout it from their large jaws. Sterk's gums had sacks of electric buried in the soft flesh and when her large jaws managed to clamp down into flesh, the electrical current would run through her teeth and into the body of those she bit, paralysing or shocking them for brief moments.
Sterk had challenged Gilgamesh because of the arrogance of the larger, male Dragons who ruled via the Council. Female dragons, although also warriors like the males, and just as adept at fighting, had always been regarded as weaker. Being born in the lower regions of the mountains, Sterk was also born of poorer breed of Dragon. A weaker breed that, when compared to the bigger and stronger breeds of Dragon from the higher mountains, were nothing but insects. Sterk was eager to prove to all Dragon that females and the lower breeds were just as strong, just as mighty. Gilgamesh had laughed at Sterks ideals, and because of this, she challenged him for the role of High Dragon, Dragon King. Gilgamesh, being the arrogant and mighty Dragon, was quick to accept Sterks challenge and planned the battle for today. By law of the Dragon Elders, any Dragon that loses the duel, must leave Dragon Country forever, and never return, and now, both Dragons were ripping and tearing at each other in the sky over Dragon Country. Both, eager to prove their point. Both striving power. Neither wanting to lose.
“Shred his scales, Mother!” The roar of another, younger Dragon rose into the air, one that all other Dragons watching the epic battle had become worried about. Kuromai, a young and eager Dragon, daughter of Sterk was circling under the clouds beneath the two large Dragons, almost double her size.
“Kuromai! Get back here!” The low growl came from the tallest peak of Dragon County, the mountain that the Dragon Council resided in. The growl belonged to Gorostas, general of the Dragon Army, and one of Sterks closest friends. Gorostas was a large Dragon, almost to the scale of Gilgamesh, but unlike the one that he served under, Gorostas had no spikes that he could use in combat. Instead, this Dragon relied on his pure and sheer strength to win his bouts. Gorostas Mountain-Mover , one of the few Dragons in Dragon history to have a double name, and one of even fewer number to have achieved such raw physical strength that he could crush the hard granite stone deep within the base of the volcanoes of Dragon Country. The large brown dragon had befriended Stern after she had single-handedly helped him defeat two of Barsk's generals after Barsk himself fell. Admiring her speed and her deadly bite, Gorostas offered his aid to the female Dragon, to which, she thanked him for, but turned down. Gorostas later, tried to pursue Sterk in hopes of them becoming mates, only to be once again, shot down by her again. Depressed, Gorostas agreed with Sterk to remain close friends, and when Sterk returned home from the wastes in the south after trying to find the nests of Wyverns that had been corrupted by the Humans, pregnant by another dragon. Gorostas volunteered to personally oversee her offspring's training, as both her guardian and mentor.
“I want to see the fight!” Kuromai growled back to the only male she had ever come to admire in her life. Her crimson scales glinted as a streak of red flashed through the sky again. A loud cry ripped through the heavens as a large chunk of dark-scaled tail crashed into the ocean just behind Kuromai, sending a huge column of water to rise into the sky and brush against the tip of Kuromai's, black-spiked tail. The young female just managed to swoop out of the way as her larger mother fell from the sky, almost landing on her daughter. Sterk's body was covered in glistening dark blood and horrible deep and long gashes. Feeling the warmth of the water on her back. Sterk spread her ripped and tattered wings wide in the air as she beat them a single time after flipping her body around and managed to swoop low over the blue ocean before rising back into the air. She was just about to lunge back into the clouds after Gilgamesh when she noticed her daughter flying low against some of the craggy rocks just in front of her.
“Kuromai, get back to Gorostas! Now!” Her Dragon voice was soft, yet also rough as she bellowed to her adventurous daughter, fearing for her safety more than her own when the large, Gilgamesh flew down from the clouds, his large body, easily able to peek over the tallest of trees in the valleys of Dragon County hovering behind Sterks own tree-sized body. He hadn't noticed Kuromai who was now quickly trying fly up into the cover of the clouds in front of the column of sharp rock that rose from the ocean like a dragons tooth as his deep chuckle boomed against the mountains next to him. Sterks sapphire eyes widened as she turned her long neck over her shoulder to look at Gilgamesh, just in time as his mouth began to glow with the colour of his red flame. Gorostas, perched high on the mountain had also noticed Gilgamesh prepare to strike with another blast of flame that could easily reach Kuromai was now quickly rising to his feet as launched his body towards the mountains edge and spread his own large wings. But Sterk was faster, she was already in flight, heading for her daughter as the hot flame roared from Gilgamesh's mouth, aimed for Sterks body just in front of the craggy dragons tooth rock where Kuromai was continuing her climb higher into the air.
She felt the heat from the flames make her scales tingle and threw her head over her shoulder, only to find her view obstructed by the dark scales of her mothers body directly in front of her, baring the brunt of the flames. Sterks cry of pain shrieked through the mountains, and every dragon watching had fallen silent. Gorostas, now hovering above Gilgamesh watched in horror as Sterks singed body crashed into the sea bellow her and then slammed into the rock behind her before disappearing into darkness. Kuromai's crimson eyes, lit up with terror as she watched her mother disappear into the ocean, and Gilgamesh, now noticing why Sterk hadn't bothered to move out of the way of his flames dropped down into the ocean to save his fallen opponent and soon too, had quickly vanished into it's depths.
“MOTHER!!” Kuromai's bellowed cry echoed as all the Dragons watching fell silent, fearing for both Sterk and Gilgamesh who were now fighting against the oceans currents, none of them truly wanting either Dragon to leave their lives as both were strong warriors, and proud leaders. Kuromai closed her wings against her back and leaned her body forward as she too started to plunge towards the fierce ocean, but had to quickly pull up when Gorostas blocked her path. Fearing that she might cause more damage than she had already caused by crashing into the generals back, she instead spread her wings causing her thin membranes to open out like a parachute in the wind and cause her to rise slowly into the air, just in time to miss the brown body of her guardian.
Gorostas flew over the young female as he nudged her back towards the mountains with his nose “Gilgamesh wont let her die, come on, we have to get back to the mountain and wait for them. They'll be up soon.” Gorostas' deep voice was barely heard by Kuromai as he tried to soothe her and coax her into flying back to the mountain.
“It's... all my fault... If she dies..” Kuromai sobbed as she glanced every few seconds over her shoulder and into the abyss of the ocean as she flew back, staying close to Gorostas' side. Feeling slight comfort in being next to the person who had protected her from danger from so long, and who had also taught her what it meant to be Dragon, but still aching for the person who had raised her; hoping, praying that somehow, Gilgamesh would save her mother from the ocean.[/blockquote][/font]
