The Masquerade

The music plays softly,
as we dance around the fragile thing
called life.

The masks held high
or tied to our faces.
As i put on my brave face,
my happy, my 'ok' face.

Switching partners
from one so quiet and thoughtful faced
to one joyous and sweet faced.

I glance around during a shaken twirl.
Are these faces real
or masks to hide the
pain, hurt,
happy, mad,
the true you?

The dance lifts me away,
away from these knowing thoughts.

That is until I'm given an ungraceful dip.
As I'm swung up the thoughts do not fade.

What would happen if-
If we looked beneath the glittering masks,
the plastered on faces?
If we remove them and show the dancers we truly are?

I bid my fake partner a far well
and race.
Race towards the rocky path,
the path with the true faces, without the masks!

As I leave the soft music dance
I leave my mask behind
only to enter a new dance.

The music rising and falling
throwing unexpected twirls
I show my face and think
'This is Life!'
